Gov. Hochul Reinstates Older Judges

As reported in the New York Law Journal (link):

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has granted the return of four midlevel appellate judges to their original courts after they were ousted through a controversial austerity measure from Chief Judge Janet DiFiore and other top-level court officials.

The Democratic governor has redesignated Ellen Gesmer, David Friedman, Sheri Roman and Joseph Maltese to their former midlevel appellate courts, Hochul spokesperson Hazel Crampton-Hays said in a statement…. Gesmer, Friedman and Roman filed a lawsuit against the chief judge and other officials last year in an effort of last resort to save their jobs.

This idea of firing older judges as a cost-cutting measure has been brewing for about a year now, and as you know, I have been following it carefully. Experienced, wise judges are needed now, arguably more than ever!

Below is an Op Ed I wrote for the New York Law Journal in December on the topic.
